Resident Evil Proves R-Rated Video Game Movies Can Succeed at Box Office
Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil grossed $60 million over its first three days in theaters. The opening weekend sets up the release as a box office success.
Deadline reported the estimated $60 million gross, marking the highest opening weekend for any Zach Cregger film or previous Resident Evil installment. The film outperformed Weapons, which was a horror hit last year. Sony Pictures also continues to benefit from the performance of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
While A Minecraft Movie and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie targeted young children, Resident Evil proves that R-rated adaptations can also succeed if the quality is high enough.
What were the highest-grossing films of the weekend?
Deadline shared the top ten highest-grossing films in theaters during the opening weekend of Resident Evil:
- Resident Evil – $60 million
