Requiem Becomes the Fastest-Selling Entry in Resident Evil History
Capcom recently revealed that Resident Evil Requiem surpassed the 5-million-unit milestone within just five days of hitting shelves. This explosive debut solidifies the title as the swiftest-selling entry in the franchise’s storied history, a feat highlighted in Capcom’s latest investor update.
The game’s trajectory is notably steeper than its predecessors, most of which emerged during the series’ massive revitalization in the late 2010s. For context, the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake—the franchise’s current commercial titan with 16.8 million lifetime sales—moved 3 million units during its debut week. Other heavy hitters like Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Resident Evil Village, and the Resident Evil 3 remake all posted comparable initial figures but ultimately couldn’t keep pace with Requiem‘s early velocity.
Before this, the benchmark for a rapid start was likely held by 2012’s divisive Resident Evil 6. At that time, Capcom reported shipping 4.5 million copies at launch. However, “shipped” figures are a notoriously hazy metric that doesn’t always reflect actual consumer demand. The industry’s broad shift toward digital distribution has since provided clearer, more transparent sales data, allowing for a more accurate assessment of a game’s true popularity.
Requiem’s unprecedented reach was bolstered by a simultaneous release across four major platforms, including a day-one launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 alongside PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X. Its dominance on Steam has been particularly striking; the title achieved a concurrent player peak of 344,124 over its opening weekend, securing a spot within the platform’s all-time top 40 most-played games.
What exactly is driving Requiem to eclipse its high-profile predecessors? Much of the success can likely be attributed to the perfect synergy of Leon S. Kennedy’s enduring star power and the refined mechanics of the recent remakes, all while offering a completely fresh narrative experience. It appears Capcom, which has enjoyed a remarkable decade-long winning streak, has once again captured lightning in a bottle.
