Reese Witherspoon Opens Up About Menopause and Depression

Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon sat down with Harper’s Bazaar for an extensive interview in which she candidly described some of the hardest periods in her personal life. She revealed that soon after the birth of her daughter Ava — when she was only 23 — she endured a prolonged episode of depression.

“She was crying all the time. I was completely drained. I never expected such a hormonal crash — it came about six months later, after I stopped breastfeeding her,” Witherspoon said.

She recalled that at the time she lacked access to professional support to help restore her mental wellbeing, and that people around her often responded with criticism and unsolicited advice.

Another major challenge came with menopause, which brought episodes of forgetfulness. Witherspoon thanked colleagues who speak openly about these issues and stressed how important it is to be patient with the changes our bodies undergo.
