PlayStation Boycott Over Move Away From Discs Begins Amid Strategy Criticism
A community-led boycott titled “#PSBlackout” is scheduled to begin on August 23, organized by players frustrated with Sony Interactive Entertainment’s recent policies and its shift away from physical game discs.
Participants plan to stop using PlayStation services to draw attention to their concerns. According to organizers, Sony has spent several years “growing increasingly disconnected from its fan base,” and moving away from physical media has served as a final straw for some players.
We understand that SIE’s capabilities are limited, but in the decisions within its power, the company continues to misuse the strong position inherited from the PS4 era. PlayStation currently has so many issues that bringing back physical versions of games would be only a half-step toward players. SIE is capable of doing much more — we miss Twisted Metal, SOCOM, Sly Cooper, and we miss Japan Studio.
During the protest, participating users plan to avoid playing on PlayStation consoles, making purchases, browsing the PlayStation Store, spending money on in-game microtransactions, or subscribing to PlayStation Plus.
Reactions across the wider PlayStation community remain divided. In one widely upvoted response, Reddit user JackJake94 wrote, “This will lead to absolutely nothing.”
Another commenter, CaptainSloppo, criticized the format of the campaign, noting, “A boycott with an end date is not a real boycott.”
The #PSBlackout initiative is set to run through August 30. Organizers hope a temporary drop in engagement metrics will prompt Sony leadership to reconsider its strategy and recognize demand for physical media.
