Players Give Cold Reception to Battlefield Redsec Battle Royale on Steam

Some players enjoyed Battlefield Redsec, yet DICE’s free-to-play Battle Royale mode failed to earn unanimous praise.

Battlefield Redsec — DICE’s free Battle Royale mode — launched yesterday. The studio aimed to usher in a new chapter for the franchise and attract players seeking fast-paced, Warzone-style combat. Instead, the debut met with a chilly reaction from the community.

On Steam the reception is currently “mixed,” with only 42% positive reviews — a surprising outcome for a franchise of this scale. The intent was to inject fresh energy into the series, but many felt Redsec came across as an unsuccessful attempt to mimic Call of Duty: Warzone.

The most common complaints include:

  • no solo mode;
  • forced matches with random teammates;
  • a short time-to-kill that makes gameplay feel chaotic;
  • uninspired maps and an unsatisfying shooting system;
  • an overall impression of being a “Warzone clone.”

Players have labeled the game “chaotic, directionless, and lacking identity,” or joked that it’s “Warzone 3.0 on the cheap.”

DICE intended to refresh the battle royale formula, but the community views Redsec as a belated and derivative experiment. Many players believe resources would be better spent refining Battlefield 6 rather than producing free versions of competitors’ ideas.
