Physical copies of the Gothic remake will still require an update to be playable offline

Early recipients of Gothic 1 Remake physical copies have encountered an unexpected hurdle: a mandatory online check-in. Even for those holding a disc, the game remains inaccessible until an initial online verification and update process is completed.

On May 22, the game preservation advocates at “Does it play?” reported that the title appears unplayable in an offline environment. Users attempting to boot the game—sourced directly from the THQ Nordic Store—were greeted by an error message stating, “Unable to check the state of the game. Please make sure you are connected to the internet and try again.” This requirement caught the community off guard, as there had been no prior disclosure regarding digital rights management (DRM) policies.

In response to the growing backlash, the official Gothic franchise account clarified the situation. They confirmed that while early copies were distributed to ensure timely access, players must download a 5 GB day-one patch to unlock the game. Once this update is applied, the developers claim the game is fully playable offline, eliminating the need for a persistent internet connection.

Unsurprisingly, the community reaction has been predominantly negative. Many view this “day-one requirement” as an intrusive form of DRM that threatens the long-term preservation of the title. While currently framed as a minor inconvenience, it raises valid concerns regarding the future of console gaming—specifically, whether physical media will remain functional once official support servers for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are eventually retired.

The sentiment is particularly sharp given that the original Gothic—a legendary single-player RPG—was entirely self-contained. For modern players, the lesson is clear: if you plan to play Gothic 1 Remake via disc, ensure you perform the initial update immediately to avoid being left with an inert piece of hardware. Those opting for digital versions will, as usual, be subject to the native DRM protocols of their respective platforms.

Gothic 1 Remake is scheduled to arrive on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on June 5.
