Star Citizen Sees Drop in Revenue and New Player Inflow, Analyst Reports
Developers still retain the ability to pull in millions of dollars.
Development on the ambitious space simulator Star Citizen has been moving forward slowly for many years. Throughout all these years, fans have continued donating, and Cloud Imperium Games has now collected a total of more than $1 billion.
The Nosy Gamer recently looked at donation statistics for Star Citizen in the third quarter of 2026 and noted that “something rare has happened.” In-game purchase revenue has fallen for two straight months, marked as “pledge” on the chart:
For the first time since October and November of 2024, consecutive revenue declines were recorded. According to CCU Game statistics, Cloud Imperium Games brought in $8.1 million in September—a 12.8% drop compared to September 2025, which saw $9.3 million. This drop was enough to make the third quarter of 2026 the first quarter since the fourth quarter of 2024 to show a year-over-year sales decline. However, sales over the last three months reached $24.7 million, representing a decrease of only 1.3%, or $300,000, compared to the same quarter in 2025.
Additionally, the data shows that September saw 41.2% fewer new players, registering 38,000 accounts compared to 65,000 last year. The Nosy Gamer connects the drop in donations and newcomers to the failure to launch the Alpha 4.11 update in September: “The lack of new content affected both potential buyers trying out the game and new ship sales to existing players.”
