I Play Rocky (2026): Release Date, Cast and True Story

I Play Rocky is a 2026 biographical drama about the unlikely path that took Sylvester Stallone from an unknown actor and screenwriter to the star of Rocky. Anthony Ippolito plays the young Stallone, with Peter Farrelly directing for Amazon MGM Studios.

What I Play Rocky is about

The film begins before the 1976 sports drama became a classic. Stallone has written a script that attracts studio interest, but he refuses to surrender the part of Rocky Balboa. The new movie follows his attempt to protect that condition while facing repeated rejection, limited money, and pressure to let a more established actor lead the project.

Amazon MGM presents the story as an underdog tale behind another underdog tale. It is based on the making of Rocky, but it remains a dramatized feature rather than a documentary or a scene-by-scene production record. Viewers should expect real people and milestones to be shaped into a focused movie narrative.

The set photographs that prompted the original report show Ippolito recreating Stallone’s 1970s appearance. Production also returned to recognizable Philadelphia locations: local reporting documented filming around the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps, one of the original film’s defining landmarks.

Cast and filmmakers

Anthony Ippolito leads the film as Sylvester Stallone. Matt Dillon plays Frank Stallone Sr., AnnaSophia Robb portrays Stallone’s first wife Sasha Czack, and Stephan James appears as Carl Weathers. The ensemble also includes P.J. Byrne, Toby Kebbell, Tracy Letts, Jay Duplass, Kiki Seto, Robert Morgan, Saul Stein, Trevor St. John, Erik Palladino, and Rob Demery.

Peter Farrelly directs from a screenplay by Peter Gamble. Toby Emmerich, Christian Baha, and Farrelly are the credited producers, with Fireside Films and Baha Productions among the production companies. The film is designed to stand on its own: it is about the creation of Rocky, not a new chapter in the fictional Rocky or Creed timeline.

Release date and current status

Amazon’s current schedule says I Play Rocky opens in select theaters on November 6, 2026 and expands later in November, close to the original film’s 50th anniversary. Earlier trade reports listed November 13 and November 20, so the studio’s newer official page is the safer source for the latest U.S. plan.

The Toronto International Film Festival selected the movie for a world premiere during its September 10–20, 2026 edition. A streaming date has not been announced. Availability outside the United States, including local titles, dubbing, subtitles, and distributors, can follow a different calendar.
