Paul Giamatti Takes Command in the Starfleet Academy Trailer

The newest addition to the Star Trek universe, Starfleet Academy, reimagines the franchise through a young-adult lens, following the inaugural class of 32nd-century cadets at the Academy. At a New York Comic Con panel, Paramount announced the show’s premiere on January 15, with episodes releasing weekly through March 12.

The first trailer spotlights the season’s antagonist, Nus Braka — a fearsome half-Klingon, half-Tellarite portrayed by Paul Giamatti. His chilling introduction includes wrenching a child from his mother and instructing the boy to clutch onto his hatred as a guiding force.

That frightened boy matures into Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta), a brooding cadet recruited by Chancellor Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter), who vows to help him locate his missing mother. Caleb’s cohort includes Darem Reymi (George Hawkins), whose resentment stems from the privileges of his influential family, and Series Acclimation Mil — Sam (Kerrice Brooks) — the first holographic student admitted to Starfleet Academy.

Sam forms an immediate rapport with Robert Picardo, who returns as The Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager. The faculty roster also brings back familiar faces such as Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) and Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) from Star Trek: Discovery. In a playful turn, Stephen Colbert — host of The Late Show — lends his voice to the Academy’s digital dean of students, delivering campus announcements. The preview teases a full school experience: tours of the grounds, rigorous training, friendships formed, and the complications of young love.
