Overwatch’s Newest Hero Is So Demanding That Blizzard Developed Custom Tech

Over the past decade, Blizzard has introduced a wild assortment of heroes to Overwatch—ranging from sentient hamsters to towering robotic figures. Yet, arguably the most complex engineering challenge the team ever faced was a simple motorcycle. Shion, the 52nd hero to join the roster and the game’s 24th damage-dealer, utilizes a high-performance bike as a core component of her kit, allowing her to charge at opponents before detonating the vehicle. During development, however, the team was baffled to discover that Shion was effectively invincible while mounted.

"We kept noticing that no one could secure a kill on Shion while she was on the bike," explained senior game producer Kenny Hudson during a roundtable interview. "When we analyzed the footage in slow motion, we realized her hitbox was actually shrinking while she was mounted compared to when she was on foot. We had to engineer an entirely new system to dynamically stretch her hitbox to incorporate the bike’s geometry whenever she summoned it—a technical hurdle we hadn't encountered before."

The motorcycle was non-negotiable, serving as the cornerstone of Shion’s identity as an acrobatic, combo-oriented flanker.

Blizzard prioritized high-mobility characters to define the game's modern era. Shion was uniquely built around the concept of fluid combos—encouraging players to chain specific moves together for maximum efficiency. Early internal builds even featured a style meter reminiscent of the Devil May Cry series, but it ultimately felt more taxing than rewarding. Balancing the payout for maintaining that meter without making her overpowered proved impossible, so the team shifted their focus toward how her standard abilities synergize.

Shion features a reliable hitscan primary fire and a chargeable alt-fire capable of deleting low-health targets instantly. Her toolkit is rounded out by her bike dash, which grants temporary overhealth, and an ultimate ability that puts her in a heightened state of aggression. The overhealth mechanic shares DNA with the development of Vendetta, as the teams worked in parallel to ensure game balance. While Hudson knows no pre-launch test can perfectly replicate the chaos of a live server, the lessons learned from recent updates give him confidence that Shion is in a strong, stable position.

Shion offers far more than the typical flanker playstyle. Hudson encourages players to explore the nuance of her kit—such as diving into the fray with her evade skill, unloading pistol clips at point-blank range, and utilizing her execution ability before mounting her bike to retreat. Alternatively, she can act as a mid-range nuisance, launching her bike toward backline targets to pick off stragglers before dashing to safety.

While she may appear overtuned, Shion is designed with a steep learning curve. "She fits the 'glass cannon' archetype," Hudson noted. "We want players to feel empowered, but mastery comes down to knowing exactly when and how to weave these abilities together. The gameplay loop is entirely dependent on that strategic execution."

According to Hudson, Shion thrives in dive or brawl compositions. She excels at softening up targets for tanks like Junker Queen and keeping pace with highly mobile heroes like Winston or D.Va. However, she isn't without weaknesses; heroes possessing crowd-control abilities—such as Ana, Junkrat, Brigitte, or Reinhardt—serve as her most effective counters.

Shion joins the roster when Overwatch Season 3, "Into the Tiger's Den," launches on June 16.
