One-Punch Man Director Shingo Natsume Announces New Sci-Fi Anime Film Ghost: End of Night

Few anime directors command as much attention on reputation alone as Shingo Natsume. After directing the frantic first season of One-Punch Man and creating the surreal, introspective series Sonny Boy, Natsume is moving to the big screen with his first original feature film, Ghost: End of Night.

The science-fiction anime takes place in a near-future setting where human labor is obsolete. Mayu Hotta voices Nike, a 15-year-old girl who grows dissatisfied with an orderly society and searches for something genuine. Early teasers, including footage released on Thursday, Aug. 6, focus on starry skies and dreamlike imagery rather than direct exposition.

The year 2027 already includes anticipated productions such as Kagurabachi and Wit Studio’s LONA, but Natsume’s project stands out for viewers drawn to his distinct directorial style.

What is the appeal behind Ghost: End of Night?

Natsume built his career applying distinct visual sensibilities to existing properties. His directing credits include ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept., Boogiepop and Others, and The Tatami Time Machine Blues. His 2021 original series Sonny Boy took a different approach, following high school students stranded across surreal dimensions to examine loneliness, growing up, and personal agency through unconventional narrative structures.

Ghost: End of Night introduces a virtual reality environment named the Orthoverse, where human feelings take visible shape. Nike works as a manager of the network’s virtual sky. When she finds a materialized emotion labeled “Flower” drifting through the system, she discards it as trash. The scenario explores the consequences of quantifying and throwing away messy human emotions.

On the film’s official website, Natsume framed the project as a tale of “despair and prayer.” He described Nike journeying into darkness to find tangible beauty while confronting hidden, conflicting feelings.

The production reunites Natsume with key creative partners. Studio Madhouse, known for titles like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Perfect Blue, and Monster, handles the animation. ACCA creator Natsume Ono provides the original character designs.

Music plays a direct role in shaping the film. Rock band Hitsujibungaku contributed six original tracks, including the insert song “Sugar.” Musician Ohzora Kimishima composed the score in his feature anime debut. Rather than adding audio after the animation was finished, the team shaped the score alongside the footage, a method associated with productions like FLCL and Cowboy Bebop. In a statement shared on X, Hitsujibungaku reflected on the emotional impact of the material, writing, “I read the script over and over, and by the end, I was always in tears.”

When is the Ghost: End of Night release date?

Ghost: End of Night opens in Japanese theaters on Feb. 11, 2027. International distribution details, including North American theatrical screenings and streaming plans, have not yet been announced.

Audiences will get an early look at the story through a manga adaptation. The print version begins serialization in the September issue of Young Ace, arriving in Japanese stores later this month.
