Olivia Dean on Turning Her Pop Music ‘Shame’ Into Gold With ‘Man I Need’

Despite commanding the top tiers of global music charts and securing the longest-reigning No. 1 single in British chart history, Olivia Dean never mapped out a plan for mainstream pop conquest.

In a cover profile published on Wednesday (Aug. 26) by The Wall Street Journal, the Grammy-winning British songstress reflected on the internal hesitation and lingering “pop shame” that almost prevented her breakthrough anthem, “Man I Need,” from ever seeing the light of day.

“I used to carry a real bias against pop music, feeling like crafting unapologetic pop was somehow uncool,” she shared. “I kept questioning myself, thinking, ‘Is this stepping too far over the line?’”

Ultimately choosing to surrender her creative inhibitions, Dean pushed past her doubts. “Man I Need” arrived as a lead single in August 2025, setting the stage for the September release of her acclaimed studio effort, The Art of Loving. Dean recalled giving herself a simple directive: “Just let go.”

The record proved to be an undeniable commercial juggernaut, climbing all the way to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in late January. It was held back from the pinnacle spot only by Ella Langley’s dominant blockbuster “Choosin’ Texas”—a competitive bottleneck experienced by several major releases throughout early 2026.

Industry tastemakers later designated “Man I Need” as the 63rd greatest runner-up single in Hot 100 history. Her full-length project, The Art of Loving, reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200, spurred onward by the top-five success of its companion track, “So Easy (To Fall in Love),” which peaked at No. 5.

Dean’s momentum remains unyielding. Her collaborative single with Sam Fender, “Rein Me In,” recently climbed to No. 45 on the Hot 100 while extending its historic reign in the United Kingdom, where it logged an unprecedented 22nd consecutive week atop the Official Singles Chart.

The artist is currently concluding her headlining North American arena engagement, The Art of Loving Live, which culminates with back-to-back performances in Austin on August 28 and 29.
