Obsidian Won’t Live in the Shadow of Fallout: New Vegas — It Will Keep Working on Its Own Games

Obsidian Entertainment will be remembered by players for the mark it left on Fallout: New Vegas. In an interview with The Game Business, studio representatives acknowledged that The Outer Worlds drew inspiration from Fallout’s universe, and some even suggested a sequel might have become “the new Fallout.”

Marcus Morgan, Obsidian’s Vice President of Operations, pointed out that fans repeatedly ask about “the next Fallout: New Vegas” at every Obsidian reveal. The studio, however, prefers to follow its own path and develop original intellectual properties rather than return to other franchises as it once did with Fallout.

Even under Microsoft’s ownership of Obsidian and Bethesda, the studio seeks to retain its creative independence. Morgan emphasized that their aim is to craft RPGs in their own voice, not to imitate existing titles. Fallout: New Vegas remains a source of inspiration, but Obsidian is striving to step out of its shadow and demonstrate it can achieve more.

“I know everyone online always asks whenever we announce a game: ‘When will the next Fallout: New Vegas come out? When’s the next game?’ But this year all three releases are original IPs created by us. Before joining Microsoft, we mostly worked on other people’s intellectual properties. There’s a real joy in building our own IP — and we’ve reached the point where we now have sequels for each of these games.”
