No Need for Choice for the Sake of Choice: Ghost of Yotei’s Creators Explain Why They Scrapped Multiple Endings

After completing work on Ghost of Yotei, Sucker Punch revealed additional plot details. In an interview with Game Informer, lead writer Ian Ryan explained how the game’s finale differs from Ghost of Tsushima. Spoilers follow.

According to Ryan, the team explored numerous possibilities, including multiple endings similar to Tsushima. In the end, the developers settled on a single outcome — the one that most authentically reflects Atsu’s arc, her pursuit of healing, and the consequences of vengeance.

“We considered everything. There were brighter conclusions and far darker ones. But it was crucial to show that Atsu must reach the end of her path, even if she loses something beyond her control despite her efforts.”

PLOT SPOILER!

The writer admitted that removing player choice from the finale contrasts with the rest of the game, which offers freedom of action. Yet the ending needed to emphasize the core theme: Atsu cannot move forward together with her brother.

“We wanted to make clear that every decision leads to this point. She finds herself once more where she believed she had lost her brother, but now a niece stands beside her — someone whose existence she did not know. She must live by Jubei’s dictum: ‘fight for the living.'”

Ryan added that the studio avoided inserting choice “for the sake of choice,” which would have undermined the emotional integrity of the finale.
