Nintendo to Vary Physical and Digital Game Prices Starting with Yoshi and the Mysterious Book

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book for Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo has officially unveiled a significant pivot in its pricing strategy for the Nintendo Switch 2, introducing a tiered system where digital and physical editions of its software will no longer share the same price point. This new approach will debut this May with the release of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. With pre-orders now live, the cost discrepancy between the two formats has been confirmed.

Players opting for the digital download of Yoshi’s latest journey will pay $59.99, while those preferring a physical cartridge will be charged $69.99. This $10 gap represents a notable shift from previous Switch 2 tentpole releases—such as Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, and Metroid Prime 4—all of which launched at a uniform $69.99 MSRP regardless of the format.

In a statement addressing the change, Nintendo explained that while the gameplay experience remains consistent regardless of the medium, the new pricing reflects the varying overhead associated with manufacturing and logistics. “This change simply reflects the different costs associated with producing and distributing each format,” the company stated, adding that this provides consumers with more agency in how they curate their libraries. Nintendo also noted that independent retailers retain their usual autonomy to set their own final market prices.

For the physical-media purists, this change maintains the status quo of the current $70 standard, but for the digital-first audience, it offers a welcome discount. It is currently unclear if this $10 incentive will be applied to every upcoming first-party title or if it is a specific case for this particular release. A quick audit of existing Switch 2 software reveals that older titles have not been retroactively adjusted to match this new pricing model.
