Players note that, when it comes to greed, the Japanese company has left EA and Activision far behind.
Players who have started Metroid Prime 4: Beyond discovered that a vast desert area Samus explores on the Vi-O-La bike has no background music at all. More precisely, the music is present only for those who, in addition to buying the $60 game, also purchase the $30 amiibo figure.
It’s worth mentioning that Nintendo does acknowledge in the amiibo’s official product description that music is one of the bonuses for its owners. However, this information is buried in the “additional benefits” section, and nowhere does it explicitly state that the area will be entirely silent without the figure.
While many commentators defend Nintendo and say that people primarily buy a cool figure and the music is just a pleasant extra, others argue the company’s greed has become downright absurd.
One fan also pointed out that the desert music can be unlocked, but only by completing Metroid Prime 4: Beyond to 100%, a process that requires many hours of playtime.
