Nintendo Projects Decline in Switch 2 Sales for Next Fiscal Year as Milestone Approaches 20 Million Units

Nintendo Switch 2 sales analysis

Nintendo’s latest fiscal report for 2026 highlights a massive debut year for the Switch 2, with lifetime sales nearly hitting the 20 million mark. While Nintendo acknowledges that these launch-year figures reached unprecedented heights compared to their previous hardware, they are forecasting a decline in year-over-year sales for the upcoming 2027 fiscal year, concluding in March.

The console moved 19.86 million units during its inaugural fiscal year. For the second year, the company projects sales of 16.5 million units. In its report, Nintendo noted, “Historically, our hardware platforms have often seen higher sales in their second fiscal year compared to their launch window. However, the Switch 2 debuted while the original Switch remained incredibly popular. This unique landscape, combined with other external factors—[Editor’s Note: Likely referencing global memory shortages driven by AI demand and recent U.S. tariff adjustments]—fueled record-breaking launch sales that surpassed any of our previous systems.”

“Given the exceptional performance during the launch year and subsequent pricing adjustments, we anticipate a year-over-year dip in unit sales for the fiscal year ending March 2027. Nevertheless, we consider these figures to be a robust result for the Switch 2’s sophomore year, and we remain confident in the continued expansion of our install base,” the company stated.

Despite the projected cooling in sales, Nintendo maintains a positive outlook on the console’s trajectory. When measured against the original Switch’s timeline, the Switch 2 is actually setting a faster pace, outperforming the full-year sales figures recorded during the original console’s 2018 and 2019 fiscal periods.

The report also shared performance metrics for key titles released throughout the fiscal year:

  • Mario Kart World: 14.7 million units
  • Donkey Kong Bananza: 4.52 million units
  • Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: 3.94 million units

  • Kirby Air Riders: 1.87 million units
