Curry Barker is undoubtedly having a career-defining year. While his debut feature, the buzzworthy horror film Obsession, has yet to premiere, he has already secured his next ambitious undertaking: an eagerly awaited A24-produced Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot. The legendary slasher franchise has endured a rollercoaster history since Tobe Hooper’s groundbreaking 1974 original, yet Barker aims to recalibrate the series by drawing creative inspiration from a notoriously overlooked sequel.

Speaking with Polygon about his upcoming work on Obsession, Barker confessed that he is an ardent admirer of the 1986 cult classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2, and he intends to weave key elements of its unique DNA into his own vision for the property.

"I prefer to keep details under wraps—I’m still in the early stages of development—but I have a massive appreciation for the second film and a clear understanding of what audiences genuinely love about its approach," Barker explains.

Arriving more than a decade after the original, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 took Leatherface and his deranged kin on a surreal journey. By infusing the narrative with the Sawyer family's bizarre participation in a high-stakes chili cook-off, the film achieved a tonal shift that felt remarkably daring. It masterfully blended dark, satirical humor with visceral horror—a stylistic gamble that remains a standout example of genre-bending brilliance.

"I was drawn to the distinct shift in tone," Barker notes regarding the sequel. "The 1980s installment tapped into something visionary—a blend of unsettling comedy that descends into true terror—and that’s a stylistic balance I am eager to explore and modernize."

While tight-lipped about specific plot details, Barker hinted that his screenplay may spotlight underutilized characters from the franchise’s history. This could potentially see the return or reinterpretation of Sawyer family members like the patriarch Drayton or the unhinged Robert "Chop Top" Sawyer. The sequel also featured an iconic performance by Dennis Hopper as the vengeful Lieutenant Boude "Lefty" Enright, a role that serves as a compelling template for future character development.

"I developed a real fondness for certain figures in that film," Barker adds. "I’m genuinely excited to bring characters to the forefront that audiences haven't seen explored in depth for a long time."
