Universal Pictures has unveiled a new trailer for the animatronic horror sequel Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, offering a tense first look at several of the film’s nightmarish machines — including the menacing Springtrap.
Picking up roughly one year after the original, the sequel brings Josh Hutcherson back as Mike Schmidt and sees Elizabeth Lail reprise her role as Vanessa Shelly, a police officer and the daughter of notorious antagonist William Afton. Mike and Vanessa have tried to shield Mike’s younger sister, Abby (Piper Rubio), from the terrifying truth about Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. When Abby vanishes — seemingly drawn to the animatronics she once befriended — Mike and Vanessa are forced to return to the cursed pizzeria and confront the trauma that haunts them in order to bring her home.
Although William Afton was last seen trapped inside an animatronic suit, apparently presumed dead, his final promise of vengeance echoes into this sequel. The trailer teases several quick, unsettling shots of Springtrap brandishing a knife and shuffling down dim corridors. Fans will also spot familiar franchise figures — Balloon Boy, Bonnie, Chica, Foxy, and Freddy Fazbear — all contributing to the trailer’s creeping sense of dread.
The first Five Nights at Freddy’s film, released in 2023, opened to roughly $80 million domestically and went on to earn more than $300 million worldwide.
Adapted from the original game by Scott Cawthon and directed by Emma Tammi, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Dec. 5.
