New Evangelion Series Announced: The Ideal Successor Steps in for Hideaki Anno

Whether you view Neon Genesis Evangelion as a timeless masterpiece or a relentless commercial powerhouse, the saga is officially set for a major return. This time, however, the series is venturing into uncharted territory: Hideaki Anno will not be penning the script. His successor is perhaps the only creative mind capable of leading the franchise without inciting a fan revolt.

Yoko Taro, the enigmatic, masked visionary behind the Nier series—which is also rumored to have a new installment in the works—will be writing the upcoming Evangelion anime. The news broke during the 30th-anniversary gala in Yokohama on February 23. Directorial duties fall to Kazuya Tsurumaki, a franchise veteran responsible for the Rebuild tetralogy and the recent standout Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. To further bridge the gap between worlds, Nier composer Keiichi Okabe will be providing the soundtrack.

While this announcement is monumental for the community, specific plot details are still under wraps. One of the most pressing questions is how this new entry will integrate with the established lore. Evangelion is famous for its definitive conclusions, whether it’s the introspective finale of the original series, the harrowing climax of The End of Evangelion, or the cathartic resolution of the Rebuild films. Because these endings leave little room for traditional sequels, the franchise has historically relied on reboots to reinvent itself.

Choosing Yoko Taro feels like an inspired decision. If any creator is equipped to handle Evangelion’s legacy, it is the man known for his surreal, existential, and haunting approach to science fiction. His work often explores complex themes of identity and existential dread—concepts that will feel intimately familiar to longtime fans.

This upcoming project will be a joint production between Studio Khara and Cloverworks. Given the current lack of concrete information, the series is likely in its early conceptual stages, but more updates are expected to emerge soon.
