New Book Explores the Life and Backstory of Final Fantasy IX’s Vivi

Following its enchanting debut in Japan last year, the Final Fantasy IX picture book dedicated to the series’ most beloved black mage is finally receiving an English localization. Vivi and Grandpa’s Memories for the Sky is scheduled for release on May 19 at a retail price of $17.99, with pre-orders currently available for fans eager to secure their copy.

Produced as a highlight of Final Fantasy IX’s 25th-anniversary milestone, this narrative delves into the formative years of Vivi’s life under the tutelage of his adoptive grandfather, Quan. The story is penned by Kazuhiko Aoki—an original event designer for the game—who captures the poignant, quiet moments as the young mage begins to navigate the complexities of the world around him.

Enhancing this heartwarming tale are the evocative illustrations by Toshiyuki Itahana, the celebrated artist credited with Vivi’s iconic character design. His artwork brings a sense of domestic whimsy to the lore, portraying Vivi and Quan in charming everyday scenarios, such as the little mage showcasing his fledgling magic to local children or Quan whipping up one of his notoriously eccentric meals.

While the original game offered fleeting glimpses into Vivi’s upbringing, Memories for the Sky provides a much-needed deep dive into his early childhood. One of the book’s most touching highlights depicts Quan measuring the young mage’s height—a domestic milestone that serves as the origin of Vivi’s name. This release marks a significant moment for the franchise’s legacy, especially as Itahana recently bid farewell to Square Enix, concluding an illustrious career spanning over 30 years with the company.
