Netflix and A24 Pass on Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Artificial’

Luca Guadagnino’s biographical drama Artificial, which chronicles the tenure of Sam Altman and the internal turmoil at OpenAI, remains in search of a distributor following Amazon MGM’s decision to pass on the project.

According to Variety, major players including Netflix, A24, and Focus Features have also opted against backing the film. Industry reports suggest that Mubi has emerged as a likely contender, with Neon also evaluating the potential acquisition.

Set against the backdrop of the 2023 corporate shakeup, Artificial depicts the dramatic week when the OpenAI board famously ousted Altman (played by Andrew Garfield), only to reinstate him days later following significant backlash. The ensemble cast features Yura Borisov as Ilya Sutskever, Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk, and Monica Barbaro as OpenAI CTO Mira Murati. The screenplay was penned by Simon Rich, with Guadagnino serving as director.
