Neil Young made a surprise return to the stage on Friday, May 22, delighting fans with an intimate acoustic set in Vancouver. The performance served as a tribute to the 90th birthday of his longtime friend and environmental advocate, David Suzuki.

During the event at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, the legendary rocker treated the audience to a stripped-back version of “Heart of Gold” before pivoting to the piano for a poignant performance of “After the Gold Rush,” complete with his signature harmonica accompaniment. This rare appearance marked his first live outing since his October 2025 show at the Painted Turtle benefit, following a period where the 80-year-old icon stepped back from the touring circuit.

The star-studded evening featured a variety of notable guests, including Jane Fonda, Al Gore, Sarah McLachlan, Bruce Cockburn, and Chantal Kreviazuk, all coming together to raise vital funds for the David Suzuki Foundation.

Young’s return to the spotlight follows his decision earlier this year to cancel his European tour. At the time, he emphasized the importance of listening to his body, assuring fans that he was prioritizing his well-being. Despite his hiatus from large-scale touring, Young has remained remarkably prolific in the studio. He recently wrapped up work on his upcoming album, Second Song, recorded alongside the Chrome Hearts at producer Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La studios. Notably, the collection is set to feature two rediscovered tracks dating back to 1964. Fans can also look forward to a new live record, As Time Explodes, arriving on May 29.

Even decades into his illustrious career, Young’s impact remains undeniable. His 1972 classic “Heart of Gold” remains his sole solo chart-topper on the Billboard Hot 100, standing as a cornerstone of his legendary Harvest album—a record that continues to be celebrated as a definitive work in rock history.
