Glen Hansard’s Family Announces Public Memorial and Funeral Details in Dublin

The family of the late Glen Hansard has released comprehensive arrangements for the esteemed Irish singer-songwriter’s upcoming public memorial and funeral services.

A public wake will be held in the Baroque Chapel at IMMA, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin, on Monday, August 3, running from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

“Glen will lie in repose for all those wishing to pay their final respects,” stated the Hansard family in an official release on Friday, July 31.

The funeral mass is scheduled for Tuesday, August 4, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. While the service is open to the public, organizers noted that interior capacity will be strictly limited given the anticipated high volume of attendees.

For those unable to attend in person, the service will be broadcast live via Irish national platforms RTE News and RIP.IE.

“The musical tributes during the service will be performed by Glen’s closest friends and family members,” the statement continued.

In lieu of floral tributes or physical gifts, the family has respectfully requested that memorial contributions be directed toward Dublin’s Simon Community—which aids individuals facing homelessness—or the relief organization Ukrainian Action.

“The family kindly asks that their privacy, as well as that of Glen’s dearest friends, be honored during this profound time of grief,” the announcement concluded.

Hansard, the Academy Award-winning artist, beloved star of the film Once, frontman of The Frames, and co-founder of The Swell Season, tragically passed away on July 29 following a motorcycle accident near his Dublin residence. He was 56 years old.

In the wake of his passing, an outpouring of heartfelt tributes emerged from iconic peers across the global music community, including U2’s Bono, Bruce Springsteen, Billie Eilish, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Reflecting on his friend, Bono shared on X: “Sometimes I would wonder if Glen Hansard truly existed…. Seriously, he possessed such an angelic presence—not distant or otherworldly, but remarkably grounded and immediate. A smiling trickster when called upon… the most musical and mischievous archangel of Ballymun, entirely unpretentious yet overflowing with grace.”
