NDP Leader Avi Lewis Criticizes EA Over BioWare Closure, Calls for Federal Support for Employee Buyout
Avi Lewis says BioWare employees should pool their money and buy the studio from EA so they can make great games with government backing.
Avi Lewis, leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP), criticized Electronic Arts after reports that BioWare is being shut down. He said the studio’s employees should get the chance to buy the company themselves and keep making games with support from Canada’s federal government.
This is what private capital does: it buys companies, runs them into the ground, and then breaks them apart for short-term profit.

In Lewis’s view, BioWare’s developers understand better than anyone how to run the studio and make the games its audience loves. He argues they should get the first opportunity to buy the company, along with state support to keep it running.
Lewis also used the phrase “the Mass Effect effect.” He said Canada needs to stop private capital from gaining more influence in the games industry.
