Children’s educator and YouTube star Ms. Rachel announced on Instagram on Thursday (Sept. 17) that she will match Macklemore’s $1 million donation to organizations supporting Palestinians.
“I will match Macklemore’s donation and I invite every wealthy white celebrity to match it and speak out against the genocide in Gaza,” Ms. Rachel wrote.
She continued, “Over 20,000 precious Palestinian children have been killed and children continue to be killed every day. We have a moral obligation to use our privilege and platforms to protect children and human rights.”
Her pledge follows Macklemore’s removal from Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour. Macklemore previously announced that he would donate his $1 million in net earnings from the tour to six organizations supporting Palestinians, and he challenged New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft to match the amount. Billboard previously reported on the donation.
Kraft shared that Sheeran called him to ask for a $2 million commitment toward humanitarian aid in the region. Kraft confirmed he would provide the matching funds, though his statement omitted specific recipient organizations.
The donations follow tensions after Macklemore was cut from the remaining U.S. dates of Sheeran’s tour. During performances on Sept. 4 and 5 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Macklemore voiced support for Palestinians, called for a free Palestine, and performed his protest song “Hind’s Hall.”
Macklemore stated that Sheeran told him Kraft called regarding the rapper’s appearance at Gillette Stadium, which Kraft’s organization owns. Sheeran stated that the tour promoter made the decision to remove Macklemore rather than him, and that he attempted to find a resolution with venues and promoters.
The controversy expanded as Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe, and Beoga withdrew from the remaining tour dates.
Earlier in the week, Ms. Rachel defended Macklemore and criticized Sheeran for yielding to pressure.
Her latest post expands on that support by matching Macklemore’s donation and calling on other wealthy celebrities to contribute.
