Following a global theatrical haul of $129 million, the action-packed sequel Mortal Kombat 2 is officially headed to home streaming. Warner Bros. confirmed that the film will arrive on HBO Max on July 24. Director Simon McQuoid has noted that the movie’s long-term performance across streaming and digital platforms will be a deciding factor in whether the studio greenlights a third installment in the franchise.

After its May 8 theatrical debut, Mortal Kombat 2 pulled in roughly $48 million domestically during its opening weekend. According to data from Box Office Mojo, the film concluded its theatrical run with $79.7 million in North America and $49.7 million from international markets. While the digital release launched on June 9, physical collectors can look forward to the 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD launch on July 28.

The 2021 series reboot was a significant success for HBO Max, benefitting from Warner Bros.’ strategy at the time to release their major features simultaneously in theaters and on their streaming platform.

The ensemble cast for Mortal Kombat 2 features Karl Urban as the iconic Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, and Jessica McNamee reprising her role as Sonya Blade. They are joined by Josh Lawson (Kano), Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Mehcad Brooks (Jax), Tati Gabrielle (Jade), Lewis Tan (Cole Young), Damon Herriman (Quan Chi), Chin Han (Shang Tsung), Tadanobu Asano (Lord Raiden), Joe Taslim (Bi-Han/Noob Saibot), and Hiroyuki Sanada (Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion).

Critical reception for the sequel has been mixed to positive, though audiences have generally been more enthusiastic, frequently praising the film’s brutal, game-accurate Fatalities and its focus on fan-favorite combatants. However, in our official review, Jake Kleinman was less impressed, labeling the sequel “an extremely forgettable movie.”

Kleinman elaborated, “Describing it as a movie feels generous; it plays more like a collection of high-octane fight choreography tethered to thin dialogue and a plot that mimics the feel of video game cutscenes. To its credit, Mortal Kombat 2 serves as a direct, earnest apology for the 2021 installment’s shortcomings. If that is what the fanbase craves, they will certainly be satisfied, but those seeking substantive storytelling will likely find themselves wanting.”

While discussions regarding a potential Mortal Kombat 3 were active last year, the project’s future remains in flux, especially considering the film’s moderate $80 million production budget. McQuoid emphasized that the studio is waiting to see how the movie performs throughout its full “life cycle” before moving forward. For now, fans remain hopeful that the loose ends from the sequel’s cliffhanger ending will eventually be addressed.
