“Mortal Kombat 2” Delayed After the Film Became a Victim of Its Own Success

Director Simon McQuoid has, for the first time, explained why the sequel’s release was moved to spring 2026.

The release of Mortal Kombat 2 was pushed back from October 24, 2025 to May 15, 2026. Until now the studio hadn’t given an official reason, though industry whispers suggested Warner Bros. didn’t need additional box-office income in 2025 — a year that proved lucrative thanks to films like Superman and other hits. The director himself has now addressed the change.

Speaking on a panel at New York Comic Con, he confirmed the new release date and described the project as having become “a victim of its own success.” He explained that the first Mortal Kombat unexpectedly took off on digital platforms, which encouraged the studio to broaden the sequel’s scope. “With every new viewing [of the original], the film grew. In the end we built a huge summer blockbuster, and that’s something to be proud of,” he said.

McQuoid added that the sequel will feature roughly twice as many fights, and that the tournament format will serve as the backbone for advancing the major plotlines. He also has concepts for further installments — he previously confirmed that Warner Bros. has officially greenlit a third film.
