Modders Port Morrowind’s World to Elden Ring — Not Everything Went Smoothly, but NPC Progress Is Underway

Enthusiasts are working to resolve a variety of technical issues.

The creator behind the YouTube channel AnotherPlus has published a new development diary for an ambitious modding project.

Modders are porting the world of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind into Elden Ring. In the current build they’ve managed to add NPCs; for now a speech-generation tool is used to supply placeholder voice lines so testing can continue.

Many items are only partially implemented; some world objects have issues and may behave unpredictably.

Right now the biggest hurdle is the navmesh: without a navigation mesh for pathfinding the AI simply doesn’t work. A reliable solution has not yet been found.

As for the navigation mesh — we haven’t made much headway. It’s currently our greatest obstacle and, in a sense, likely the single factor preventing the project’s long-term completion. It’s the only issue for which I don’t yet have a clear idea of a solution, and there’s a real chance we may not overcome it. I hope it works out; I believe it’s possible. I still have faith we can finish this, but navmeshes worry me — they’re essentially the only thing causing me concern right now.
