Moana remake receives scathing reviews from critics

Early critical reception for the live-action adaptation of “Moana” has been overwhelmingly lackluster. As of now, the film holds a meager 35% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while Metacritic reports a score of 45 out of 100, signaling a tepid and largely unfavorable response from reviewers.

The primary point of contention is the adaptation’s glaring lack of creative vision. Many critics argue that the remake is essentially a shot-for-shot recreation of the 2016 animated original, failing to provide a fresh perspective or meaningful narrative evolution. The heavy reliance on CGI and digital effects has led many to characterize the production as a lavish, soulless carbon copy rather than a standalone cinematic experience.

However, the feedback is not entirely grim. Some critics appreciated the filmmakers’ dedication to preserving the source material, noting that the adaptation retains the charm, humor, and heart of the original. Lead actress Catherine Laga’aia has earned significant praise, with many identifying her performance as the standout element of the film. Additionally, the new musical numbers, crafted by Tony and Grammy award-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, have received positive recognition.

The live-action “Moana” is scheduled for international theatrical release on July 10.
