Mike McMahan has rapidly established himself as a powerhouse in the world of adult animation. After honing his craft as a writer for Rick and Morty—eventually taking the reins as showrunner in its fourth season—he transitioned into creating his own irreverent sci-fi hits. His portfolio includes Hulu’s Solar Opposites and the acclaimed expansion of the Star Trek universe with Lower Decks. Now, McMahan is venturing into a new partnership with Prime Video for his latest animated comedy, Odd Jobs.

Transporting viewers to the year 2127, Odd Jobs chronicles the chaotic lives of gig-economy laborers who navigate a “neo Midwest” described as an “extreme late-stage capitalist nightmare.” In this dystopian future, workers use a titular app to secure eccentric and often life-threatening assignments. The premise promises a vibe reminiscent of Mad Max, updated for the digital age with smartphones and slightly better hydration levels.

The series is co-created by McMahan and Dominic Dierkes, a veteran of Solar Opposites and a founding member of the influential internet comedy troupe Derrick Comedy. In a joint statement, the duo humorously reflected on the show’s inspiration: “While exploring the wilderness, we inadvertently stumbled through a rift and found ourselves centuries in the future. We witnessed some truly grotesque omens regarding the trajectory of the human race. Rather than trying to prevent those outcomes, we decided to turn them into a cartoon.”

The project is backed by Titmouse, the prolific animation studio responsible for hits like Big Mouth, The Legend of Vox Machina, and Scavengers Reign. While anticipation is building, Odd Jobs has not yet received an official release date.
