Microsoft Unveils Project Helix as Next-Gen Xbox
Microsoft has officially pulled back the curtain on its next-generation hardware ambitions, revealing the internal codename for the successor to the Xbox Series X: Project Helix. The moniker was confirmed on Thursday by Asha Sharma, the newly minted CEO of Microsoft Gaming, signaling a new chapter for the brand’s console legacy.
“It has been an incredible morning with Team Xbox, discussing our unwavering commitment to the brand’s evolution, including Project Helix—the codename for our next-generation console,” Sharma shared in a post on X. “Project Helix is designed to set a new benchmark in performance, unifying the Xbox and PC gaming experiences. I’m eager to delve deeper into this vision with our partners and various studios during my first GDC next week.”
The official Xbox account complemented the announcement with an animated logo featuring a double helix that twists to form a stylized ‘X’ within a circular border. This visual identity strongly suggests that the “Helix” name represents the intertwined DNA of PC and console gaming, reinforcing Microsoft’s push toward a cross-platform ecosystem.
Microsoft is preparing for a massive showing at the upcoming GDC Festival of Gaming (formerly the Game Developers Conference). During the event, Jason Ronald, Vice President of Next Generation at Xbox, will lead a session titled “Building for the Future with Xbox.” The presentation will focus on how Microsoft is providing developers with a more adaptable and connected infrastructure.
The session description provides a compelling glimpse into the company’s long-term strategy:
2026 represents the 25th anniversary of Xbox, a milestone celebrating a quarter-century of innovation and community. From our debut console to the power of the Series X|S, and from the expansion of Game Pass to the launch of the ROG Xbox Ally, the brand has consistently evolved. As we look toward the horizon, our mission remains centered on empowering creators and ensuring seamless play across all devices. Join us as we discuss the vision for a more flexible, interconnected future for players and developers globally.
Since taking the helm in February, Asha Sharma has frequently discussed the “return of Xbox” as a primary objective of her leadership.
“We are returning to our roots with a renewed focus on the console hardware that defines us,” Sharma noted. “It is the anchor that connects our most dedicated fans to the ambitious experiences created by our development partners.”
Details regarding the next-gen hardware have been trickling out over the last several months. Last June, Microsoft confirmed a strategic partnership with AMD to “co-engineer silicon” specifically for the next generation of Xbox consoles. Former Xbox President Sarah Bond previously indicated that the upcoming hardware would likely utilize a Windows-based architecture, potentially moving away from a traditional “walled garden” approach. This has fueled ongoing rumors that the next Xbox could function more like a high-end PC, potentially integrating third-party storefronts such as Steam and the Epic Games Store. Bond characterized the upcoming machine as a “premium, high-end curated experience,” suggesting a target toward the enthusiast market.
Project Helix is currently anticipated to hit the market in 2027. We will continue to provide updates as more information surfaces.
