Michael Mann Ready to Use AI in “Heat 2” to De-Age Actors

Director Michael Mann is preparing to employ artificial intelligence to de-age both characters and performers in the upcoming thriller “Heat 2.”

“I don’t experiment with technology for its own sake. If there is a pressing or aesthetic reason, I delve into the tools I need. For example, aging and de-aging will be central to the film,” Mann said.

Similar techniques were used by Martin Scorsese on “The Irishman.” Earlier reports indicated that Leonardo DiCaprio was set to star in the “Heat” sequel. Filming is slated for 2026 and will take place in Chicago, Los Angeles, Paraguay, and Singapore.

“Heat 2” is scheduled for release by United Artists (an Amazon MGM division) in 2027. The sequel’s narrative will pick up immediately after the first film. The original “Heat,” released in 1995, chronicled the showdown between Detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) and the calculating criminal Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro).
