Mel Gibson Apologizes for Mocking Sign Language

Academy Award-winning actor and filmmaker Mel Gibson, known for directing The Passion of the Christ, has issued an apology after facing backlash for mocking a sign language interpreter.

The incident occurred last weekend during Fan Expo Canada. As Gibson took the stage for a Q&A session with fans and a moderator, he began flailing his arms in a gesture that mimicked the sign language interpreter present at the event.

“Sometimes when you are thrust into the spotlight, your mind goes blank, and occasionally, a moment of thoughtless idiocy arises without any malicious intent… I offer my sincere apologies to anyone I may have offended,”

This is not the first time Gibson has found himself at the center of public controversy; throughout his career, he has faced allegations involving antisemitic remarks, domestic abuse, and driving under the influence. Meanwhile, the sequel to his hit film, The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection, is slated for theatrical release in the spring of 2027.
