The fourth campaign of Critical Role has captivated audiences with its rich narrative depth, introducing the enigmatic world of Aramán, a rotating ensemble of fresh faces, and an innovative West Marches-inspired structure. Yet, a new campaign wouldn’t feel complete without the debut of a tantalizing homebrew subclass designed to shake up the Dungeons & Dragons meta. Enter the Daredevil, a high-octane archetype for the Fighter class.
Matthew Mercer, the creative force behind Critical Role, is renowned for his mechanical ingenuity. From the steampunk aesthetics of Percy de Rolo’s Gunslinger to the health-sacrificing mechanics of the Blood Hunter, Mercer constantly pushes the boundaries of player options. Even while stepping into a player role for Campaign 4 as Sir Julien Davinos, Mercer’s design instincts remained sharp. This latest subclass was polished with input from tabletop luminaries Christopher Perkins and Jeremy Crawford, who have transitioned their expertise to Critical Role’s publishing house, Darrington Press.
The Daredevil was first teased during episode 17, but it wasn’t until a recent installment of Tale Gate—a talk show on Beacon dedicated to fan inquiries—that Mercer delved into the philosophy and features of this reckless combatant.

“The Daredevil is still a work in progress,” Mercer noted during the discussion. “The goal was to build a Fighter archetype centered around high-stakes gambling. Julien is the personification of that ‘leap before you look’ mentality. Sometimes that impulsiveness pays off brilliantly; other times, it’s a disaster.”
Viewers caught a glimpse of these mechanics in episode 18. Instead of using the traditional Second Wind feature to regain health, Julien can expend it to trigger a “Daring Strike.” While this gives him temporary hit points rather than actual healing, it also allows him to add an extra 1d10 damage to his attack. The catch? If the attack misses, the target gains advantage on their next strike against Julien. It is a punishing trade-off that favors the bold.
Mercer finds this volatility essential to the TTRPG experience. “Safety is comfortable, but there’s a unique thrill in succeeding against the odds—and just as much fun in failing spectacularly,” he explained. This embrace of the dice’s chaos is a sentiment shared by Campaign 4 DM Brennan Lee Mulligan, making the subclass a perfect fit for the current table dynamic.

While the full class documentation is still under wraps, observant fans have noted how the subclass synergizes with Campaign 4’s unique rules, particularly Desperate Measures. This rule activates when a character becomes “Bloodied” (falling below 50% HP), offering potent combat options at a significant cost. For Julien, combining a Daredevil’s Daring Strike with a Desperate Measure could result in astronomical damage, provided he’s willing to risk his survival on a single roll.
Ultimately, the Daredevil is a masterclass in “glass cannon” design. It is built for players who prioritize cinematic moments over tactical safety. As Mercer joked with a grin, “Other players might ask why you’re doing something so dangerous. The answer is simple: because it’s fun!”
Critical Role Campaign 4 airs live every Thursday at 10 p.m. PDT on Twitch, YouTube, and Beacon.tv. VODs are made available on YouTube the following Monday at 12 p.m. PDT.
