‘Matrix 5’ Creator Promises to Do Justice to the Franchise

Acclaimed filmmaker Drew Goddard, known for The Cabin in the Woods, has provided an update on the development of the fifth installment in The Matrix franchise.

While Warner Bros. officially brought Goddard on board in the spring of 2024, the project is currently still in the screenwriting phase.

“I can’t reveal too much yet because we’re still deep in the writing process. I need to give myself the necessary space to find the right story. My approach remains consistent: does this resonate with me? I absolutely adore the work of Lana and Lilly Wachowski; their films have been profoundly influential on my creative journey. I take this responsibility very seriously. I feel the weight of wanting to do right by the fans, the original creators, and my own inner fan,”

Goddard shared in a recent interview with Variety. He also remained tight-lipped when asked whether Keanu Reeves would reprise his iconic role as Neo.

The franchise’s previous entry, The Matrix Resurrections (2021), struggled to find its footing at the box office, failing to recoup its budget and resulting in an estimated $200 million loss for the studio.

In addition to his work on The Matrix, Goddard is also the screenwriter behind the upcoming adaptation of Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling—a project that has already generated significant industry buzz.
