Marvel Legend Kieron Gillen Returns to His D&D-Inspired Dark Fantasy

Die — the Hugo Award–nominated dark-fantasy saga by Kieron Gillen (whose credits include Uncanny X‑Men and Young Avengers) and artist Stephanie Hans — concluded its main run after 20 issues in 2021. In that finale the core group of friends, who were trapped inside a tabletop role‑playing nightmare reminiscent of the 1980s Dungeons & Dragons cartoon, at last make their way back to the ordinary world. But the amoral deity that forced their ordeal refuses to let the story rest.

Gillen and Hans have reunited for a new miniseries, Die: Loaded, which is scheduled to arrive on November 12, 2025.

“There is always a frustration when you finish a book,” Hans told Polygon via email. “The story has stopped being told but still lives in your mind. Die is a forever evolving world that I have the privilege to shape and color. I feel very lucky to be allowed to linger in this beautiful universe we created because each time I get to visit, it gets deeper and challenges my abilities as an artist.”

Die: Loaded reassembles the party to mourn Chuck, the most reckless of their group, who never returned from the previous campaign. The issue charts the characters’ attempts to settle back into everyday life while carrying the burdens and secrets of what they experienced — and while those closest to them begin to face the consequences of those hidden truths. In two pages shared exclusively with Polygon, a new player discovers the Jumanji‑like die that drags people into the game; she must choose a character archetype and an animal totem, a decision that awakens memories of a small moment with wildlife she encountered in suburbia.

“The first issue wasn’t really singing for me until I wrote the second page here,” Gillen said in an emailed statement. “Die is about the biggest, gothic fantasy stuff imaginable, but it’s also about the mundane. What makes the book work is the juxtaposition of the magical and the mundane, and that’s what you get here — bartering with epic bear gods one minute, and then digging into looking at foxes feed in your background the next. That’s Die, all over.”

Die Loaded #1 will be available in comic book shops on November 12, 2025, featuring a main cover by Stephanie Hans and an alternate cover by Peach Momoko.
