While chance encounters happen all the time backstage in the music industry, one particular dressing-room introduction with Kendrick Lamar left a lasting impression on Marcus Mumford.
Appearing on the SmartLess podcast, the Mumford & Sons frontman recounted his very first interaction with the Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper following an unforgettable performance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival.
Mumford revealed that the meeting wasn’t just a casual backstage greeting—it was specifically requested by Lamar himself. “When I was invited, very explicitly invited, backstage was after Kendrick Lamar played Bonnaroo,” Mumford shared. “There was a message that came down from on high that Kendrick would like to see you. When Kendrick calls, you come, right, because he’s the king.”
However, nothing could have prepared the British singer-songwriter for the remarkably candid atmosphere he walked into.
“He was shedding almost all of his clothes right as I walked in. It was amazing,” Mumford recalled with amusement. “I thought, what incredible nerve to say, ‘Yeah, come on back after the show right at the moment I strip down to my underwear, and we can have a chat.’”
The 39-year-old musician ultimately praised the West Coast rap icon for remaining entirely unbothered and authentic during their initial introduction, admiring his signature composure. “Genuine confidence. Pure swagger,” Mumford noted.
Historically, Lamar has headlined Bonnaroo on three separate occasions—in 2012, 2015, and 2023—with Mumford & Sons sharing the festival lineup back in 2015.
Currently, Mumford is trekking across North America for the latest leg of Mumford & Sons’ extensive Prizefighter Tour, which features upcoming stops in Minnesota, Iowa, Atlanta, and a major three-night residency at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.
