Marathon: Review in Progress

Marathon Gameplay Visuals

I was caught off guard by the profound impression Marathon left on me. Despite my long-standing appreciation for Bungie’s catalog—having invested countless hours into the world of Destiny 2—I remained skeptical that an extraction-based loop centered on ephemeral loot would resonate with me. The premise seemed straightforward: deploy into a hostile zone with a set objective, scavenge every scrap of value you can carry, and navigate or neutralize threats to secure your exit.

For those unacquainted with the subgenre, Marathon adheres to the core philosophy of extraction shooters: death results in the total loss of all gear and treasures brought into the fray. It is a grueling exercise in risk management and tactical decision-making, and the experience truly shines when it forces players to confront the weight of those stakes.

Marathon Strategic Combat

Fundamentally, Marathon’s mechanical execution is peerless. Bungie has always been the gold standard for gunplay, and that mastery is evident here. Every firearm possesses a distinct tactile feedback and acoustic identity, making each weapon feel unique. This level of craftsmanship extends to the Runner shells—Marathon’s specialized “hero-shooter” framework—which dictate how players engage with the enigmas of Tau Ceti IV.

The game is an intricate web of systems that rewards those who can master its complexities, and the Runner kits are the primary tools for that mastery. The Thief’s abilities, for instance, offer a delightful degree of disruption. I found immense satisfaction in utilizing their drone to harass opponents—perhaps by manipulating a door to lure an unsuspecting squad into a lethal bottleneck. If you’re feeling particularly ruthless, you can lurk near an extraction point, ambushing a weary group at their most vulnerable moment to claim their hard-earned spoils as your own.

Success in Marathon is largely predicated on situational awareness. Because sound is a critical gameplay element, every skirmish with AI hostiles is a calculated gamble. Startling a flock of local fauna or being detected by a UESC Sentry can broadcast your location to the entire map. Occasionally, a contract will demand a loud approach, forcing you to brace for the inevitable retaliation. I quickly learned to view my gear as temporary; eventually, your prized rifle will likely end up in a rival’s inventory. Reckless noise only accelerates that process.

The atmosphere of Tau Ceti IV is captivating, rivaling even the most legendary locales in Bungie’s history. Marathon is undeniably stunning, but its true beauty lies in the juxtaposition of its vibrant vistas and the constant, underlying threat of violence. Each landmark eventually becomes the backdrop for a personal narrative—a story of a narrow escape or a heartbreaking defeat.

Tau Ceti IV Environment

When you aren’t fighting for your life, the codex provides a somber look at the history of those who perished on this world. Many of these narrative threads are gated behind successful extractions with specific rare items, necessitating multiple runs to uncover the full picture. Much of the lore remains obscured for now, with redacted entries hinting at monumental revelations waiting within the Cryo Archive.

It is already evident that Marathon is a remarkable achievement, yet significant questions remain before I can commit to a final grade. The progression through the initial maps—Perimeter, Dire Marsh, and Outpost—suggests that the Cryo Archive will be a pivotal encounter. The true scale of the narrative is still coming into focus, and I am eager to see how these ambitious threads finally converge.
