Marathon enters Steam’s top 3 sellers; Sony can rest easy
It appears Sony Interactive Entertainment can finally breathe a sigh of relief. The latest joint venture between the company and Bungie has already captured significant interest among the Steam community.
With only days remaining until the official launch of Marathon, the extraction shooter has already secured a spot in Steam’s top three highest-grossing titles, driven by a surge in digital pre-orders.
This indicates that a substantial portion of the audience has embraced the game, notwithstanding the wave of criticism that followed the initial playtests. While testers previously voiced concerns regarding a lackluster user interface and various technical elements, many players have found Bungie’s squad-based mechanics highly engaging.
Although peak concurrent player numbers saw a sharp decline from 140,000 to approximately 60,000, the title’s standing in the revenue charts proves it has successfully resonated with fans of the genre. The game is currently listed on Steam for $40.
Sony’s acquisition of Bungie for nearly $4 billion several years ago was a massive investment. The coming days will be a crucial indicator of the real commercial impact Marathon will have on the company’s bottom line.
