Marathon Director Calls Rumor of Destiny Merger Fake

Marathon Game Director Christopher Barrett addressed rumors regarding Bungie’s plans, though creative director Jullian Marion dismissed the claim that Bungie intends to merge Marathon and Destiny while leaving other details from a massive anonymous leak unaddressed.

Marion stated on X that she worked on both games and, despite shared traits and the Bungie DNA, they are separate projects.

The rumor surfaced as part of a large anonymous post that first appeared on 4chan and was later gathered on Reddit. The post claimed that Bungie supposedly wanted to connect Marathon to the Golden Age of humanity from Destiny, bring back former Destiny developers, and use ideas from a rumored pre-production version of Destiny 3. It also asserted that in December Marathon will become free-to-play and receive a permanent PvE mode named Investigations.

Marion specifically denied the information about merging the two franchises while declining to comment on the remaining statements.

In June, Bungie released the final scheduled update for Destiny 2 and reported that no further major updates are planned. Later, it became known that at least 292 Bungie employees were laid off.
