Mahershala Ali Movie Your Mother From Director Bassim Tariq Receives Positive Reviews

Fans hoped to see Mahershala Ali star as Blade in the MCU for years. That dream ended earlier this year when the actor closed the door on the project for good. However, a silver lining emerged as Ali teamed up with director Bassim Tariq for a new movie called Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. Reviews dropped ahead of its Sept. 25 release to glowing praise.

Rotten Tomatoes has Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother sitting at a perfect 100% across 17 initial reviews. The film follows Ali as a religiously devout hitman who fights his way across Houston to protect his children following the death of his wife. The action reflects Ali’s preparation for Blade. John Cho, Giancarlo Esposito, and Tramell Tillman join Ali in the cast.

Reviewers praised Ali’s performance and the overall aesthetic of the film. Zachary Lee at TheWrap wrote that “what Ali, Tariq and the collaborators have assembled feels not just like kismet but divinely ordained, as if this was the movie they were always meant to make.” While Ali and Tariq’s Blade remains a “what if?“, audiences can enjoy the positive result.

What happened to Marvel’s Blade movie?

Marvel first announced Blade in 2019 with Ali attached to star. Bassim Tariq joined as director in 2021 and left in 2023 following numerous delays. A new director arrived later but left in 2024 due to additional production setbacks. The film was once reported to be a Prohibition-era piece. Costume designer Ruth E. Carter was attached to the project before leaving to work on Sinners, which features a similar premise.

Marvel eventually stopped providing updates and the project drifted into limbo. Kevin Feige said earlier this year that he felt like a “failure” for failing to get the movie off the ground. Ali confirmed soon after that if Marvel ever makes Blade, it won’t be with him. Ali’s only appearance in the MCU remains a voice-only performance at the end of The Eternals.
