In 1994, director Roland Emmerich released Stargate as a sci-fi adventure intended to launch a larger trilogy. Although those sequel plans fell through and Emmerich moved on to direct Independence Day, the franchise continued to grow. A few years later, creators Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner expanded the film universe with Stargate SG-1, which ran for 10 successful seasons on the Sci-Fi Channel, now known as SyFy.

SG-1 follows an interstellar crew using futuristic portals called Stargates to travel across the galaxy. Their mission focuses on finding alien technology and defending Earth from potential attacks. The show largely maintained an adventure-of-the-week structure alongside larger overarching storylines. A major shift occurred at the end of season 7 when the crew discovered Atlantis, a legendary city created by an advanced alien race called the Ancients.

That discovery set the stage for Stargate Atlantis, a franchise spin-off following a new team investigating the city. Viewers can watch all five seasons of Stargate Atlantis without any prior knowledge of the franchise. The series streams for free on YouTube, and is also available on Pluto TV and Prime Video.

What is Stargate Atlantis about?

Led by Major John Sheppard, played by Joe Flanigan, the Atlantis team explores the lost civilization while defending themselves against the Wraith, a vampire-like alien species. The expedition members face immediate danger upon encountering the Wraith. Major Sheppard forms a team of experts consisting of astrophysicist Dr. Rodney McKay, played by David Hewlett, Lieutenant Aiden Ford, played by Rainbow Sun Francks, diplomat Dr. Elizabeth Weir, played by Torri Higginson, and Teyla Emmagan, played by Rachel Luttrell.

The team encounters various galactic threats while trying to conserve resources and fight the Wraith, who harvest human life-force for nourishment. Later in the series, the crew gains new members, including Ronon Dex, played by Jason Momoa, whom Sheppard and his team rescue from the Wraith.

Atlantis inherited high expectations from SG-1, which had built a dedicated fanbase by the end of its seventh season. The spin-off succeeds on its own terms by building upon existing lore while delivering self-contained drama.

Unlike the SG-1 crew, who maintained easy access to Earth and Stargate Command, the Atlantis team operates millions of light-years away in the Pegasus Galaxy. Being cut off from Earth and its resources increases the stakes for every mission.

Stargate Atlantis is a morally complex survival story with compelling characters

While SG-1 and Atlantis share structural similarities, their tones differ. The parent series balances survival with interplanetary exploration through a planet-of-the-week format. Atlantis focuses more strictly on survival, with storylines exploring unchecked hubris and the ethical costs of scientific advancement.

For example, the show features a retrovirus designed to convert a Wraith into a human. While its practical results vary, the ethical consequences are severe. Altering an enemy’s memories on a genetic level creates a difficult moral dilemma for the crew despite their good intentions.

Stargate Atlantis explores similar complexities throughout its five seasons, detailing how advanced civilizations fell despite their power and how humans face identical risks if they underestimate their enemies. Atlantis also follows SG-1 by anchoring its adventure in interpersonal dynamics, allowing characters like Sheppard and McKay to develop over time.

When capable people work together, conflict is inevitable. Atlantis addresses these clashes through the unique perspective of its crew, balancing tension and anxiety with humor and heart.

Stargate Atlantis ended after five seasons in 2009, but the series finale provides a natural conclusion rather than an abrupt stop to the adventure. Decades later, the Pegasus Galaxy and its expedition crew remain worth revisiting.

Stargate Atlantis can be streamed on YouTube.
