Magic: The Gathering Is Officially Reprinting a Powerful $18 Card for the First Time in 20 Years

After a nearly twenty-year hiatus, Magic: The Gathering enthusiasts are finally getting a chance to acquire Soul Spike once again. The formidable black instant, originally introduced in 2006’s Coldsnap, transformed into a surprisingly costly staple driven by its potent competitive utility and a complete absence of subsequent reprints. Now, Wizards of the Coast is resurrecting the roughly $18 card as part of an upcoming Secret Lair drop tied to the Reality Fracture storyline.

Revealed on October 13, the 怪異学校 — Strange School bundle features a suite of five mono-black spells adorned with atmospheric, manga-inspired illustrations crafted by talented Japanese artists. Soul Spike stands out as the crown jewel of the offering, though the collection also packages several other sought-after reprints. Collectors can secure the drop for $29.99 for non-foil variants or $39.99 for traditional foil versions.

Soul Spike Is Finally Receiving Another MTG Printing After Two Decades

Debuting back in July 2006, Soul Spike is a seven-mana black instant designed to deal four damage to any target while simultaneously restoring four life to its caster. While that output hardly seems efficient for a heavy seven-mana investment, the spell features a game-changing alternative casting condition: players are allowed to exile two black cards straight from their hand rather than paying the full mana price.

Dropping four damage and gaining four life completely free of mana makes the card exceptionally tempting, even if it requires sacrificing short-term card economy.

In contemporary play, Soul Spike has established a fiercely competitive niche within Modern format Necrodominance archetypes. These strategies leverage the powerful enchantment to expend life totals in exchange for massive card draw. Soul Spike acts as an ideal pressure valve, converting surplus black cards into direct damage while clawing back vital life points. It forms a devastating synergy that has kept the veteran spell relevant in high-level tournaments.

Naturally, the soaring price tag isn’t driven by mechanics alone. Because the card has languished without a single traditional reprint since its debut in Coldsnap, players have had to rely on a scarce, dwindling supply of originals. Current marketplace trackers place a non-foil copy around $17.57, with vintage foil editions commanding vastly higher sums.

While the secondary market for classic Magic inventory has experienced wild fluctuations recently—with forgotten gems surging in formats like Commander and Reality Fracture driving up legacy planeswalker prices—Soul Spike’s value stems from a straightforward mix of genuine tournament demand and twenty years of scarcity.

Though a limited Secret Lair availability won’t necessarily crash the value of original printings, it finally supplies players with an accessible, long-awaited alternative.

Soul Spike Isn’t the Only Premier Reprint in Strange School

While Soul Spike commands the spotlight, Strange School packs an impressive punch across its entire roster. The five-card box contains:

Bitter Ordeal represents another major win for builders, with its original Future Sight printing—featuring the iconic futuristic border frame—fetching roughly $26 on the open market. Attrition isn’t far behind at nearly $19, meaning these two cards paired with Soul Spike easily outvalue the $29.99 entry price for the entire non-foil drop.

The stark, high-contrast monochrome manga aesthetic adds further appeal, capturing the eerie, ominous tone of Hexhaven, Reality Fracture‘s sinister reimagining of Strixhaven.

Wizards has also unveiled a companion Reality Fracture drop dubbed Duality Distorted, which highlights Thoughtseize, Desperate Ritual, Pyroblast, and Tribute to the World Tree. This quartet brings back legendary Magic illustrators to reimagine their classic pieces, framed inside beloved retro borders. Much like Strange School, it carries a retail price of $29.99 for non-foils and $39.99 for foils.

Both collections will launch individually through the Secret Lair Chaos Vault, alongside comprehensive bundles like the comprehensive Reality Fracture mega-package. Pricing spans from $159.98 for the standard non-foil bundle up to $234.99 for the ultimate Everything Edition, which packs both foil and non-foil variations of the new releases.
