Magic: The Gathering Designer Highlights Underrated $1 Final Fantasy Commander
The Universes Beyond collections for Magic: The Gathering consistently introduce a wealth of legendary creatures perfectly suited for the Commander format. While the most hyped cards often grab the spotlight immediately following a release, the sheer volume of new additions means that hidden gems frequently surface long after their debut.
“The evaluation process for Commander is notoriously gradual,” Gavin Verhey, a principal designer for Magic, noted during a 2026 MagicCon: Las Vegas interview. “Standard evolves at a breakneck pace; players instantly dissect the meta to identify optimal decklists within days. Commander simply doesn’t operate under that same intense pressure.”
The official Magic pro tour blog frequently shares data highlighting current trends in the Standard format. While powerhouse cards like Ouroboroid from Edge of Eternities and Badgermole Cub from Avatar: The Last Airbender remain dominant forces in green-based archetypes, Izzet strategies—powered by a rotating roster of top-tier blue and red spells—consistently hold the most popular spot. At MagicCon: Las Vegas 2026, competitive lists prominently featured new arrivals from Secrets of Strixhaven, such as Erode, Molten-Core Maestro, Prismari Charm, and Tablet of Discovery.
Conversely, Verhey observed that players regularly uncover viable, overlooked Commanders in older sets. “It feels like I encounter a fresh take on a Streets of New Capenna Commander every other week,” he remarked regarding the four-year-old expansion. When asked to identify an underrated legend from last year’s Final Fantasy collaboration, Verhey pointed directly to Venat, Heart of Hydaelyn.
“I genuinely expected this card to see broader adoption—I’ve seen some activity, but not as much as anticipated,” Verhey explained. “Venat is a double-sided card, but the front face is where the real value lies: it allows you to draw a card every time you cast a legendary creature spell.”
As a mono-white 3/3 for three mana, Venat thrives in “legendary tribal” shells. While her single-color restriction limits your card pool, her ability thrives on an “oops, all legendaries” strategy, allowing for plenty of creative, varied sub-themes. For seven mana, you can exile a nonland permanent and transform Venat into Hydaelyn, the Mothercrystal. As a divine force, Hydaelyn grants a +1/+1 counter and indestructible to a creature you control at the start of combat, and if that creature happens to be legendary, you get an extra draw.
While that seven-mana transformation is often a late-game play, building around +1/+1 counters is a smart tactical angle. Within the Final Fantasy set alone, options like Zack Fair, Aerith Gainsborough, Rosa, Resolute White Mage, and Auron, Venerated Guardian offer strong synergy. More broadly, prioritize tax-reducing effects for white spells—such as The Wind Crystal and Pearl Medallion—alongside support cards that reward playing legendary spells, like Gandalf the White and Heroes’ Podium. It is a straightforward, reliable strategy that rewards you for maximizing your legendary count (don’t forget that legendary noncreature spells count, too!).
The beauty of this build lies in its accessibility. Venat is incredibly affordable, with the base version costing roughly $1.50 and even the stunning, watercolor-anime style art by Minoru & Kei Satsuki hovering around $5. While some supporting cards may be costlier, this remains a highly viable, budget-friendly option for a casual Commander deck. Simply gather your best white Universes Beyond legends and start brewing.
“I think the card is fantastic, and it’s genuinely fun to build around,” Verhey concluded. “I expected it to see more play, but honestly, that’s true for roughly half the legends in that set. I suspect for many of them, their moment in the sun is still yet to come.”
