Madonna to Critics Calling Dance ‘Dead’ in 2026: ‘Maybe You’re Playing the Wrong Music’

In 2026, Madonna remains committed to keeping the pulse of dance music alive. With her highly anticipated album, Confessions II—the long-awaited successor to her 2005 landmark Confessions on a Dance Floor—on the horizon, the Queen of Pop made her stance clear on Instagram this Wednesday (May 20). Responding to the state of the genre, she remarked, “If your dance floor feels dead, maybe you’re playing the wrong music.”

The legendary artist accompanied her message with a series of stylish photos, featuring her in a fur-trimmed jacket, capturing shots of her footwear on the dance floor, and offering a glimpse into her glamourous creative space.

While Madonna’s commentary could be interpreted as a general observation, many fans are reading between the lines. Speculation is mounting that the remark was a pointed response to Charli xcx, who recently sang, “I think the dance floor is dead / So now we’re making rock music” on her latest track, “Rock Music.”

Social media reaction was swift, with users flooding the comments section noting the perceived shade directed toward the younger artist, with remarks like, “Oh, the Charli shade” and “Bye bye, Charli” quickly surfacing.

Billboard has reached out to Charli xcx’s representatives for comment.

Charli xcx’s shift in musical direction follows a monumental two-year period defined by the success of her 2024 album Brat, which reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and reshaped the landscape of modern pop. Regarding her pivot away from club sounds, Charli explained to British Vogue in April that continuing in a dance-oriented direction felt restrictive and melancholic, noting that she is more interested in exploring new creative boundaries.

Though the shift has sparked debate among listeners, Charli addressed the transition on X (formerly Twitter) this Tuesday (May 19), stating, “If you get me, you get me and if you don’t, you don’t. And that’s ok. I’m not trying to win people over; I’m doing what feels authentic to me.”

Madonna’s Confessions II is scheduled for release on July 3. So far, the project has been teased with two singles: “I Feel So Free” and the Sabrina Carpenter collaboration “Bring Your Love,” following the duo’s surprise performance at Coachella earlier this spring.
