Get ready to hear a fresh rock-infused anthem, because Carrie Underwood is officially returning for her remarkable 14th consecutive year as the headliner of the Sunday Night Football opening sequence.

Announced on Tuesday, August 4, the powerhouse country artist will once again deliver her electrifying rendition of “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night” ahead of each week’s live broadcast. Sharing the announcement via a joint Instagram post, the official Sunday Night Football account teased fans, writing, “A brand new version of the iconic anthem is ON ITS WAY.”

Originally born from Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ classic track “I Hate Myself for Loving You,” the anthem is a natural fit for Underwood’s edgy vocal style. In an official statement, the superstar expressed her excitement about leaning into her passion for rock music:

“This year’s show open welcomes Sunday Night Football into my ongoing rock star fever dream. It’s one of my most favorite opens yet!”

Longtime creative director Tripp Dixon explained that this year’s visual and sonic revamp draws heavily from Underwood’s well-documented appreciation for rock-and-roll. “We’ve worked to match these two rock frequencies of past and present as they come together in Carrie’s high-energy performance,” Dixon noted. “The greatest players and teams in the NFL will take it from there.”

Underwood first took over the prestigious role as the musical face of Sunday Night Football in 2013. The tradition was previously spearheaded by Pink in 2006, followed by Faith Hill, who anchored the weekly opening from 2007 to 2012.

Following her acclaimed second season as a judge on American Idol this past May, Underwood maintains a busy schedule with a series of high-profile summer performances, including back-to-back headlining dates at Nashville’s historic Grand Ole Opry later in August.

As a four-time Billboard 200 chart-topper and GRAMMY Award winner, Underwood continues to cement her legacy with 43 entries on the Billboard Hot 100, anchored by her breakthrough 2005 chart-topper, “Inside Your Heaven.”
