Louis Tomlinson’s True Feelings About One Direction Songs on the Band’s 16-Year Anniversary

While the rapid passage of time may still evoke a sense of nostalgia, the enduring legacy of One Direction remains firmly etched in Louis Tomlinson’s affections.

Marking the sweet-sixteenth anniversary of the band’s fateful inception on The X Factor—a milestone that catalyzed the monumental boy-band resurgence of the 2010s—the British singer-songwriter took to Instagram. To celebrate the occasion, Tomlinson treated fans to a nostalgic journey through the group’s celebrated catalog, sharing candid reflections on various tracks starting with the 2012 fan favorite, “Moments.”

“So many special memories with this one,” Tomlinson shared regarding the Up All Night deep cut, co-written by Ed Sheeran. Praising the immaculate melody crafted by @teddysphotos, he added, “The first time I ever truly felt proud of my own vocal performance on a track.”

Reviewing other gems, Tomlinson praised “Na Na Na” as “peak lyricism” and declared of “Kiss You,” “Always loved this one.”

Reflecting on “Live While We’re Young,” which climbed to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, he noted, “Not my absolute favorite, but an undeniable pop anthem. I can still picture filming the music video so vividly—we made some incredible memories that day!”

The musician also highlighted specific tracks that evoke strong memories of his former bandmates, mentioning that “Over Again” unfailingly “reminds me of Niall for some reason.”

Paying tribute to his late bandmate on “More Than This,” Tomlinson recalled, “Pretty sure this was the moment Liam first unlocked his falsetto. I vividly remember how immensely proud we all were of him. He sounds extraordinary on it!”

Following their beginnings on The X Factor, Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Zayn Malik went on to conquer the globe with four consecutive sold-out world tours, four chart-topping albums on the Billboard 200, and six top 10 smashes on the Billboard Hot 100. It all commenced on July 23, 2010, when Simon Cowell intervened to unite the solo hopefuls into a powerhouse ensemble.

A decade has now passed since the group’s indefinite hiatus began in 2016, during which all five artists carved out thriving individual paths. Tomlinson is currently touring in support of his latest solo endeavor, How Did I Get Here?, which made a notable debut at No. 16 on the Billboard 200 this past February.

“Emerging from a musical phenomenon as massive as One Direction means all eyes are perpetually on you, and immediate triumph is often demanded,” Tomlinson discussed in a previous interview with Billboard‘s Jason Lipshutz. “Those pressures are entirely natural, but if you allow them to take the wheel, they can easily guide you toward poor decisions. I’ve purposely approached this latest record with a much broader, more panoramic perspective.”
