Deadline reports that Disney is facing at least a $132 million loss following the commercial failure of the blockbuster Tron: Ares.
Two weeks after its release, the sci‑fi picture led by Jared Leto and Jeff Bridges has taken in $103 million worldwide. The production budget reportedly climbed from an initially stated $180 million to $220 million.
The story centers on an artificial intelligence intent on enslaving humanity. Ares also features Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Gillian Anderson and others, and was directed by Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales). Critics were lukewarm, with a 53% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Earlier, Disney decided not to continue the Tron franchise amid the film’s underwhelming box-office performance.
