Legacy of Kain: New 2D Action Title and Defiance Remaster Revealed

Since its debut in 1996, the Legacy of Kain series has stood as a cornerstone of dark fantasy gaming, chronicling the complex, blood-soaked power struggles of vampires within the gothic realm of Nosgoth. However, following the 2003 release of Legacy of Kain: Defiance, the franchise entered a long and frustrating period of dormancy, save for a brief, ill-fated foray into multiplayer with 2014’s Nosgoth.

The tide began to turn last year with the successful launch of the Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered collection. As it turns out, those updated classics were merely a herald of a much broader revival. In a surprise double announcement, Crystal Dynamics has revealed that a full remaster of Legacy of Kain: Defiance is on the horizon, alongside an entirely new 2D prequel titled Legacy of Kain: Ascendance.

Published by Crystal Dynamics and co-developed by Bit Bot Media and FreakZone Games, Ascendance appears to draw inspiration from the recent resurgence of high-fidelity retro side-scrollers like Shinobi: Art of Vengeance. This nostalgic 2D action title features a trio of protagonists, each offering a distinct combat methodology. While the core gameplay utilizes stylized pixel art, the experience is bolstered by high-quality anime cinematics and visual nods to the franchise’s original PlayStation aesthetics. Fans will be pleased to note that the original voice cast is returning to their iconic roles, including Anna Gunn as Ariel. Legacy of Kain: Ascendance is set to launch on March 31 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, Switch 2, and PC.

Simultaneously, Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered aims to modernize the 2003 finale. This version goes beyond a simple resolution bump, introducing refined character models for the dual protagonists and a completely revamped lighting engine. The developers have also overhauled the camera systems, map interface, and the original pre-rendered cinematics. Most notably, the remaster serves as a piece of digital preservation, including previously cut content and a playable demo of LoK 6: Dark Prophecy, a sequel that was cancelled early in its development cycle. Defiance Remastered arrives on all major platforms on March 3.
